1860
Henry Drover gave the township a piece of huckleberry marsh land to be used as a school site. A humble one-story schoolhouse was built.
1887
The city of Huntington found it necessary to build another school building given the increase in population. The original school building, known as the Third Ward School, was now the responsibility of the city of Huntington.
1895
May 17, 1895 the old schoolhouse mysteriously caught fire. Many speculate that the building was set afire as there were many objections to remodeling the old building.
A new building was built and it was called the Williams Street School because of its location.
1926
The building name was changed to Horace Mann School. The name was decided upon because Horace Mann was one of the greatest educators ever to appear in the American Education scene.
1989
The new building was built on Waterworks Road. A committee agreed the Huskies as a mascot.
2010
Horace Mann Elementary School closed and became the Horace Mann Education Center (HMEC). The renovation was completed to house Central Office.
2018
Horace Mann Elementary School reopened.
